I took my morning coffee to the river’s edge and heard the distant thrum of the fast water that marked today’s Class III section. As the mist lifted, a movement on the far bank materialized into an enormous caribou, followed by another and another… They stepped into the river, swam across to a point below and melted back into the forest. My day had only just begun.
