I feel so lucky to have found Tincup Lodge. It was the trip of a lifetime. I arrived by helicopter from Burwash Landing after being picked up in Whitehorse. All arranged in advance by the lodge. Meinrad, the owner of the lodge, owns it and has a license to fly. What a way to arrive - the trip was incredible flying through the mountains. You arrive at this breathtaking remote location surrounded by mountains and Tincup Lake was like glass. I hiked, kayaked, encountered wildlife if you want to be active or you can sit on the deck and just soak up the surroundings. My cabin was luxurious and the food and service was five-star. I loved my time there and can’t wait to return.
I needed a Tincup rejuvenation so I went back there last week. This place is incredible, beauty is everywhere you look. We got a day of rain in showers and we could get the smells of nature all over the lake while fishing. Fishing was exceptional as usual. I even got a huge trout from the shore in front of the lodge after a few casts before dinner one night. I got a big pike too, which I was not expecting. It seems that pikes are around in the few shallower areas of the lake. We had a good time in the fishermen's/fisherwomen's lounge. A great horned owl came one night on the railing in front of the window and looked at us for a while. A mother lynx and her kittens are also a familiar sight at Tincup. They come around 9 pm and check for rabbits or smaller critters. Meinrad keeps this place very pristine. It is my #1 place to go. This place is very high-end and yet remains modest and unassuming. Congratulations Meinrad.
I travelled with Terre Boréale with Max as guide through the beautiful and remote Olgilvie Range near Tombstone. It was an amazing experience backpacking through true wilderness. Max is a highly skilled guide who has great route finding skills, and is expert in mountain and bush travel. And a sense of humour and patience! All food is home dehydrated, carefully crafted and delicious. Max is extremely knowledgeable about the birds and animals in the Yukon, and their lives and habits and is happy to impart his knowledge and passion. We saw caribou, Dall sheep, marmots, pikas, grizzlies, and lynx ... golden eagles, and peregrines and many more birds! Also the amazing aurora borealis!! It was a challenging and rewarding journey, a real immersion in the wild. Max and Milena offer a special experience. Highly recommended!
Me and my sister booked two nights of Northern Lights Tours with Terre Boreále and I’m so glad we chose this company! Max our guide/company owner was amazing! He picked us up from our hotel and drove us out to some remote locations. We kept moving the first night so we could "chase the lights" essentially. He supplied hot tea, hot water bottles, camping chairs, delicious homemade cookies, and even hand and feet warmers when my sister decided to almost freeze to death LOL. The second night he took us to a different location since we had already been to the others. This was a frozen lake. We arrived just in time for an amazing northern lights display. He took some professional photos with his camera of us and emailed them to us. He also helped me program my camera for the best chance of catching some photos of the lights. Overall this was a 10/10 experience for us. I would recommend this company and tour to anyone heading to Whitehorse!
Six-day trek in the Yukon wilderness that surpassed all my expectations. You don't need to be a hero to do it – the guides are experts at getting ordinary mortals to do extraordinary things. Max is a remarkable guide, ably assisted by Boris. You do need to be reasonably fit and have decent gear; backpacking boots make a difference when you're hiking in the tundra. This trip ranks up there with my Annapurna trek more than 30 years ago. I cannot recommend this expedition outfit enough. I hope to do another trip with them next year!
Very clean and welcoming. The cabin was well stocked with all the supplies you need to prepare meals in your own kitchen. Plenty of room for a family of four. Nice trails around the retreat and friendly and helpful owners. Nice that it is out of town and relatively close to Takhini Hotsprings and the Yukon Wildlife Preserve. A good place to relax for a couple of days.
The cottage was extremely comfortable, warm and well stocked. The large north facing windows were perfect for viewing the northern lights and the stunning scenery. The landscape is just picture perfect – truly a winter wonderland. Sundog Retreat was definitely the highlight of our holiday.
Thank you Sundog Retreat … our stay last night was peaceful, relaxing and recharging of our souls ... your cabins are lovely ... wish we could stay longer!
I did the seven-day dogsledding trip with Sky High. It was absolutely amazing. The location just out of Whitehorse is very convenient, the staff are fantastic and the experience is something most of us only dream of. Our guides on the sled trails varied throughout the week which was actually a great thing. While they are all incredible everyone has a different teaching style and you find that you pick up tiny little things from each instructor during your stay. The lodge is really nice and the best part is that you are completely Off The Grid. NO Wi-Fi, no power, it's great. Jocelyn will take cameras and camera phones on a nightly basis to charge if required but unless you are using your phone as your only camera, you may never need to get anything charged. The outhouse is very cool (literally in -30 I imagine) but it is away from the lodge. About 20–30 metres I would say, so plan your evening drinks accordingly. I got up the first night to use the outhouse and the stars were so stunning that every night if I woke up I would get up and head out to the balcony for five minutes of star gazing. What a view. You learn everything you need to about your dogs. How to put them on, take them off, untangle them mid mush, feed them and of course poopa scoop. Its very comprehensive and leaves you feeling that you could actually learn this as a skill if you wanted to stay a fair bit longer. We kind of got thrown in the deep end a bit as they unfortunately had a drastic change in weather and the snow was disappearing fast, but even then you knew you were in good hands. Everything was very safe and there have been very few things that I've done that were that much fun. The staff, the guides, the lodge and the experience were all first rate. Dogsledding isn't for you if you are a bit princess-like though. You need to stay focused, listen, do what you are told (immediately), not care that you are going out to the loo in your long johns (trust me you just do it), love being without Facebook or Instagram for a week, and you need to enjoy good wholesome food. I would have no hesitation in recommending Sky High to anyone and everyone who would like to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
I went to Sky High Wilderness Ranch for their four-day Hike with Huskies. When my trip date was approaching I was informed that I was the only one who had booked the four-day hike that week. At first, I was a bit worried but I really shouldn't have been! Owner Trudi reached out to me with a fabulous new itinerary which included a day trip to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve and Hot Springs. My itinerary was adjusted to include two hikes, several horseback rides and the Yukon Wildlife Preserve and Hot Springs day trip. A four-day hike would have been great; however, I honestly wouldn't have wanted my trip to go any other way. I would definitely recommend Sky High Wilderness Ranch for a short ride or a week-long trip. The owners and staff are incredible people with awesome stories and the surrounding views are spectacual. The accommodations are perfect with a cozy, rustic feel.
Our family with two children stayed for two weeks at Sky High and really didn't want to leave. The owners are all very welcoming and truly love what they do. The area is beautiful – great for hiking, horseback rides and relaxation. The view over Fish Lake from our cozy cabin was just wonderful. Our four-day horseback ride and hike with huskies tour were breathtaking. Jocelyn is a great cook and keeps a watchful eye to make sure everything is perfect. Loved it!
This tour was perfect! I can’t imagine a better way to visit "the last frontier." Our driver–guide was a joy to be with and full of interesting and funny stories. The itinerary and the included excursions were very well done; the majority of the optional excursions that I participated in were well worth the additional money spent, especially the Kenai Fjords tour.
